Ok i have a situation here and im running out of options and need someone to help me at the earliest if they can. Till yesterday i had my laptop working fine and today when i switched it on, it simply wont boot and show a file error, i tried to fix it but i did'nt help. I tried booting with a Bootable CD and was able to see the content of the disk fine but for some damn reason, it does'nt boot ! Not to waste time, i got a new Harddisk for the laptop and installed XP on it as it was on the previous hard disk and i put this old hard disk in an external USB casing.

Now for some stupid reason, it wont display any contents while i plug the HDD in this casing. I have another spare external Hard disk and when i try to use it on same casing, it works fine. Now to double check on the problem, i installed the harddisk inside the laptop again and tried booting to dos via WIN98 bootable disk and it works !

Now the only way i can think of getting my data out is using some Dos based USB Drivers and connecting another external HDD on a USB port. Has anyone connected an external USB HDD via DOS anytime before ? Can someone help ! :(

Umm, thats a sticky situation you got there. I have no idea. Let us know if you were able to find a solution.

You could possibly try taking the hard drive to a hardware specialist, although they may charge an arm and a leg to recover the data.

I don't know much about Win32 systems, but do know that a fresh install of Windows wouldn't get rid of registry settings. So my best bet would be to reinstall windows. Since it doesn't replace your current registry, your software *should* have no problems running afterwards, but please consult a win32 specialist before trying this, for I haven't seen win32 systems in a loooong while ;-)

Hello Sanjay,

Well i tried connecting to an External USB HDD using DOS, and it worked. You can download this driver and see if it works for you. It did for me. http://www.datoptic.com/Drivers/DAT.exe
