I'm interested in creating a newsfeed for my website. None of the free ones correlate with the theme of my site that well, and paying for one is a bit too expensive for me at the moment.

I'm wondering how webmasters legally obtain news/articles for custom newsfeeds if they don't write them personally. Do I have to find sites with news I'm specifically interested in and get permission to include them in my newsfeed, or is there another way I'm not familiar with?

If I create a custom newsfeed, is it possible to automate it? I realize if I installed someone else's feed, I could have it update throughout the day at certain intervals, but can I do that with a feed I create myself for my own website? Or will I need to manually update it?

Although I painted some very broad strokes here, I'm still wondering what a general pricing would be to create/install a newsfeed on a website? I plan on placing a project for it here on SL hopefully one day soon.

I'm just curious about how it all works, automatically creating separate html pages for each story, where to get news articles, where to submit my newsfeed once completed, etc. I appreciate all posts and emails. If there is anything I have left out that needs addressing before commenting, please feel free to contact me via email or post here.

Thanks a lot.

Hi,

You can have custom newsfeeds from other sites. They are updated at a regular interval. I duuno why u r not able to integrate them. They are normally into xml format and by designing an xsl file, you can change to format to suit your site's theme.

You can get your own news feed created as well and u dont need to manually update it. You can have a mod rewritten to update it.

Thanks Abhigyan. I appreciate you taking the time to reply.

I now know I can create a custom newsfeed and automate it. I'd still like to know what's next, or what's involved entirely. I've researched the topic only to come up with countless how-to articles written for people with tech knowledge beyond mine. I wouldn't be doing any designing/programming/integrating myself. I just need to know what I have to do from a webmasters standpoint to make this work. I know this is a programmers area, but I figured some of you have probably seen it all, so I'm thinking this would be a good place to ask.

Has anyone out there gone through all the steps of creating one?

Thanks again.

No much Myles now you need to do. Get a good programmer from SL and he will create all thses things for you in a jiffy (well not in a jiffy but in some days).

As a web master u need to know the technology that's all and that too so that some idiot don't make fool of you.

If you had soem problems with these how-to-do articles you referred to, you can post a few links of these and your doubts and I will try to clearify them to you.

Abhigyan

This may sounds like a foolish question, but dose an RSS feed contribute to the bandwidth of the hosting server that the web site resides on?

i posted a job for help with a news feed two days ago but no response yet. There are scripts that gather it by keywords...then you can publish it on your site.

Yeah, I have found a few free newsfeed services that gather news by keywords, but they seemed to take my keywords out of context and return unrelated news. I thought it could be because the keywords I tried were too vague, so I also tried some specific ones too, and the results were often slim to none. I figure there's more long term benefits for my website to create/brand my own newsfeed, but I still don't entirely understand how it all works and what my contribution would have to be to it all.

Thanks for the reply, and good luck with your project.
