As a webmaster I am just the messenger so I just forweard what the client wants. It makes your job easier doesent it? Then there is no guessing which color is what... Although I too find it funny that everyone wants something cloned...

Just a question to you, maybe a bit off topic. Do you think most webmasters just get projects and outsource on scriptlance, or is it mostly people looking to have original work done for themselves? I have had a bad experience where some guy promised some client a flash intro to the quality of the $2500 (original rights) intros you see on templatemonster and tried to tell me he wanted "something like that one" for $200.

As for the cloning thing...Don't people realize that if it has been done before then it proabably won't make them any money? I do find this kindof strange, especially the constant "scriptlance clone" projects.

Watching Scriptlance clones is a kind of fun. After 2-4 months they are just dead or have 1-5 projects listed (usually posted by the site owners).

I think it is webmasters getting projects and outsourcing. Although I have some personal projects I have a Mambo template request in which client asks for clone of christies.com so that is what I put in my bid.

I think there will always be more webmasters outsourcing work to other websites because many companies want to work with pepople who understand the technology and are local. The webmaster then makes sure the work is done.

However as a webhosting I have seen many fly by night web development firms take my clients for $$$$ and have nothing to show for it. These same companies are probably the same webmasters that dont pay for work.

I have no problem using escrow provided the fee is included as part of the bid price.

I usually request demo or a non working mock up using a jpg with a watermark (to protect the designer)

As far as cloning goes sometimes it is desgin other times it is just functionality.

I love those too :P Why clone it when you can go buy it right from the website lol. Oh wait its cause they want you to clone it for $25 ;)

You know what else? Budget range is $0 - $X yet min bid is $5. Shouldnt the budget min be $5 too? :)

I'm in the u.s. North Carolina...Take a look at template monster's flash intros. http://www.templatemonster.com/flash-intro.php ...I may have high expectations, but isn't expecting something exactly or very close to something like the $2500 intros for $200 a bit unreasonable? Especially when the guy outsourcing the project proabably asked for considerably more than $200 from his client. It's not a very big deal for me, you win some you lose some as far as clients. Just woundering how many webmasters on here try to pull off the same thing (definately not saying that everyone is looking to make a 50%+ profit from outsourcing their work on sl, like the "legitimate" one that posted in this thread) :) Sorry to go a bit off topic, just woundering since someone brought up outsourcing their client's projects.

If you are in the US you should know that there is not such thing as "fair" in an open market, expecially when you are dealing on a global scale.

Whats hard to understand?

Eighty-eight percent of the world's population growth
takes place in the Third World. More than a billion people today are
paid about 150 dollars a year, which is less than the average American
earns in a week. And growing numbers of these poorly paid Third World
citizens want to come to the United States.

So you end up paying them much more that you would earn in a regular job, the webmaster marks up and makes a profit. (which you seem to want to regulate) Thi is how bsiness is run.

Yes exactly, I have come to understand this after being on here a bit more. I have nothing against this practice. I just pick my projects more wisely now. What you are saying is perfectly fair, I have nothing against that. I am just personally not willing work for $5/hr to get a project done so someone can profit 50% off of it. It is just not worth it, especially since I do this in my spare time as a hobby for some extra money. Just my personal viewpoint on the issue, not saying that you as a webmaster are wrong for outsourcing projects by any means.
