View Full Version : Is "template" a dirty word?
Ok so why do templates usually get a bad rap...? Specifically "flash" ones.
I am certain that a lot of webmasters and webmistress(es) would like to hear why programmers/web designers don't get excited about templates.....
Sound off!:)

what do you understand by "template"? the template monster crap thats floating around? and what the hell is a 'webmistress' ? :)
a template its just code (mostly html) used to separate the design from dynamic code. or it can be a css stylesheet+images (used to separate the html from the design)

Well, I guess so....these template sites are EVERYWHERE...if a person wants a website, this is what they see first. Most everyday, average people who are just trying to build a presence on the web...have no idea where to go or where to start...
They google website design or something similiar and BOOM, in your face, ready made, glorious bells and whistles templates, (yes from monster and the other mega sites)...
Little do they know the disdain these "jewels" can create for programmers.
All I was asking is why these templates (and I had no idea it is just monster templates) are met with such scorn....
They (those would be webmasters & yes webmistress(es) think they are doing a good thing by picking one out, but apparently you have no love loss for that work being sold...
and what the hell is a 'webmistress' ?
Now if a boy has a to ask a gal a question like that....!!! :) ;)

Well first, not all templates are bad. Some of them are good, but the problem is that since there's no real good way to protect templates. The popular templates from say templatemoster, boxedart etc. are floating around for free. So, most people are avoiding them to have a same design floating on their web page as well as someone else's too.
Ah, I see...so even if ones "buys" the entire template...I mean the 1K and beyond...for exclusivity...they really don't have that?
Also, I believe even at that price you still have to pay them for customization...
They sure can market to the uninformed masses! (and not so long ago I numbered among them).
So the text in the flash....why can't it be opened like a word doc...I have some files that super easy to edit...just ignore the "code" and insert, update text....but the fla. ...oh my :(

Well i too noted the weird word. Which according to Cambridge dictionary (http://dictionary.cambridge.org/results.asp?searchword=webmistress&x=0&y=0) doesn't exist. Just like the way there's nothing called a programmeress similarly there's no webmistress. These are all gender less words.
"Because some perceive a gender-specific bias present in the "master" part of the term webmaster, some women choose to use the feminine term webmistress as the name of their profession..."
See Wikipedia................
OR :)
"A person responsible for the implementation of a Web site."
See Computing Dictionary............

webmistress=webmaster
As a note the Websters dictionary and the Cambridge dictionary have been petitioned to add the term Webmistress and it under consideration along with other new words being used in society today :)
Besides...I don't want to be genderless! I rejoice in my femininty. Maybe it is a cultural word choice perhaps? Although in that, I am not certain :)
I think it is very interesting that others have found the word "wierd". In the English/American language to add the letters "er" to a verb...such as the program, makes the word into a person or a noun. The letters "er" have no gender....this is true trendywebs. So programmers is the correct term with no gender application.
However in the English/American language, the entire word "master" is given a male gender. And its accompanying female word is "mistress"...so, the term webmaster=webmistress.....each one applied as the gender dictates.
I suppose if one wants to, she could forgo that and simply say webmaster, and be gender neutral....
However, I have always enjoyed expressing my feminine being....hope you all don't find that too wierd :)

Ah, but Trendywebs, this is the English language we're talking about, which means you can do just about anything you want with it! I know, I've been teaching it for 17 years!
Fact is, webmaster wouldn't be in most dictionaries, so webmistress should be quite alright - although I'd prefer just 'mistress' ;)
At this point i think we could begin our own SL dictionary :) :)
Still on flash, basically, what is decompiling? (taking apart?)
And is it something that a programmer should charge a large fee for?

Yea true you can mold it in anyway you want. In short you can screw it as much as you feel like lol.

Lol you and your smart comments. I always have enjoyed them lol.
Hey, what can I say? I'm a smart guy! :D
Truth be told, English is the mongrel of all languages. It's had more lovers than Paris Hilton. You've got bits of French, German, Spanish, Latin... you name it, it's mixed in there. Most other languages are 'pure' languages, so are much more rigid.
Here endth the lesson.

Thank you Head Master :D. And yes you are very right. The word "Bunglow" is taken from an Indian language "Bangla" which means a house. Its just a jumble of many languages like you explained before. I remember you bunked a few classes when i was taking the classes for english :D hehe and ofcourse you are smart!!

And is it something that a programmer should charge a large fee for?
Yes...decompiling is basically taking the compiled flash '.swf' file apart and then creating a '.fla' file from it for editing in Flash itself.
No...a programmer shouldn't ask a large fee for this, since it is mostly just his time that is involved. It takes 5mins to decompile a file, though the software for doing this is relatively expensive. I think I paid about $70 for Eltima Flash Decompiler about a year back.
